WCK's Hurricane John Response (Sept.-Oct. 2024)

by WORLD CENTRAL KITCHEN INCORPORATED

After making landfall as a Category 3 hurricane in late September 2024, “zombie storm” John reemerged, regained strength and returned to bring more rainfall to already inundated areas along Mexico’s Pacific Coast. More than 37 inches of rain deluged parts of southwestern Mexico, causing severe flooding. Power outages were widespread and many roads and bridges became impassable, isolating entire neighborhoods from having access to food, water, and other critical resources. WCK teams scouted the region and found that rural areas—sometimes hours away from each other—were most in need of support. Within towns, the scale of devastation varied as some streets had been flooded, while others weren’t. Our teams conducted street-by-street assessments to determine food support needs, handing out tortas (sandwiches) as we did so. WCK utilized a multi-faceted approach to distribute nourishing meals to families impacted by Hurricane John, mobilizing an incredible network of partners we established when responding to Hurricane Otis in late 2023. We partnered with 20+ local restaurants, allowing us to provide fresh, hot meals quickly and efficiently to rural communities located hours away from our base of operations in Acapulco. WCK also established a relief kitchen near Acapulco. In total, WCK served over 885,000 meals in Mexico.
